About the score.
How the daylight score works
One point is one hour of daylight. We add the time between sunrise and sunset across every local calendar day in the selected year, then round the annual total to the nearest hour. Equal scores share a rank.
The same SunCalc astronomical model powers the day explorer. It accounts for the apparent sunrise and sunset, including standard atmospheric refraction. Polar daylight and darkness are included, and daylight saving time does not add daylight. Monthly bars share a scale from 0 to 24 hours of average daylight per day.
These are full-year astronomical estimates for our 82 supported city centers, including future dates. Weather, terrain, and surrounding buildings aren’t modeled. This is a daylight ranking, not a ranking of cloud-free sunshine. Leap years include an extra day, so compare cities within the same year.
